A carbon monoxide detector detects the presence of the toxic gas, carbon monoxide (CO) to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. As carbon monoxide is odourless, colourless and tasteless, it is difficult to detect without the help of a detector.
Inhaling even a tiny amount of this toxic gas can cause death. Mild affects can lead to headaches and flu like symptoms, while exposure to low levels over a long period of time can cause depression and memory loss.
Following the same principle as a smoke detector, the detector monitors CO levels and sounds an alarm before the levels become dangerous, giving occupants time to ventilate or evacuate the area. (Please note, smoke detectors will not detect carbon monoxide, and vice versa.)
