Boiler flues in voids

It is a well-known fact that carbon monoxide can cause poisoning and, at worst, death.  In the UK, many people have died because boiler flues have been badly installed.  This is why it is so important to have your boiler service carried out annually or an annual gas safety certificate (CP12).   The engineers at My Plumber will carry out all the safety checks that are required to make sure your boiler is running safely.

What can go wrong with a flue?:

  • Incorrect installation
  • Corrosion
  • Leaking joints

All of these things need to be checked annually or you put yourself at risk of Carbon Monoxide poisoning.

Since 2013, because of the increase in the number of deaths, regulations have changed.  Boiler flues in voids (i.e. which are concealed behind walls or in ceilings) must now be accessible.  This is achieved by the installation of hatches or access panels.    If an engineer arrives on site and cannot see the flue, he MUST make the boiler “At Risk” and, with the owner’s permission, he must switch off the boiler until the new hatches are fitted.  So it is now regulation to ensure that boiler flues in voids have access panels. The reason is so that engineers can inspect the joints.

Always use a Gas Safe registered company to carry out checks on your boiler. The consequences of getting someone in who is not trained should be unthinkable.
