Hot Water Cylinders

At my plumber we have over 20 years experience of installing and replacing hot water cylinders in homes in West London.

We can install both vented and unvented hot water cylinders so whichever type of central heating system you have in your home we are the people to call when it goes wrong or needs replacing.

If you are unsure about which type of hot water cylinder is installed in your home please don’t hesitate to give our friendly office staff a call and we can assess which you have, plus offer a few tips on the diagnosis of your particular problem.

We know how frustrating it can be when you are left without an hot water which is why we can offer same day repairs in most cases.

What type of hot water cylinder do you have?

There are 2 main types of hot water cylinder in most homes.

Vented Hot Water Systems

If your home is older than 30 years old you most likely have a vented system. This means that your hot water cylinder is fed water from a cold water tank, usually in the loft space. This tank also acts as an expansion.

As water heats up the molecules expand increasing the volume of the water. This extra water has to go somewhere. If it didn’t it could verily easy burst your pipes.

Unvented Hot Water Systems

Unvented system, also known as a sealed system, the hot water cylinder will deal with this expansion by an external bubble, or sometimes an internal expansion is fitted inside the boiler – mainly Megaflo systems use this technology.

Both unvented and vented hot water systems can be direct or indirect.

So what do both of these terms mean?

Direct vented cylinders

Direct cylinders were first designed to be used alongside solid fuel appliances and copper back boilers. Today direct cylinders are more commonly used where the economy 7 tariffs are in use.

Vented cylinders are available in different grades – 1, 2, and 3. The grade determines the thickness of material required to make the cylinder and thus the amount of pressure the cylinder can withstand.

They are usually size on a “working head” in meters which means the height difference between the cylinder and the header tank usually in the loft.

Indirect vented cylinders

Indirect copper hot water cylinders are designed to work in conjunction with central heating systems. Heat is transferred from the boiler to the water contained in the cylinder via a heating coil.

Vented hot water cylinders are available in different grades – 1, 2, and 3.  The grade determines the thickness of material required to make the cylinder, this then determines the amount of pressure the cylinder can withstand.
